I was brought up on art. My father thought I had a great hand at art and sent me to art school. But he did not want me to become a photographer.
In many ways, I've chosen to be plain, almost too plain, too self-effacing. Like, if I record a vocal and I don't like the way it sounds, I would have them turn it up and take the reverb off it to make it as plain as possible.
You've got to break through this idea of being light as a ballerina. The heavier you'll feel, the lighter you'll look.
